DRASCO, Ark. — A Drasco woman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting her ex-boyfriend 17 times during a violent confrontation last year.
Rebecca Mryglod, 38, pleaded guilty to first-degree domestic battery and was sentenced Tuesday by Sixteenth Judicial Circuit Judge Tim Weaver to 240 months in the Arkansas Department of Correction. According to the sentencing order, additional charges of second-degree domestic battery and simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms were dropped as part of the plea agreement.
The case stems from a November 8, 2024, incident when Cleburne County sheriff’s deputies were called to a disturbance on Altom Road in Drasco. Deputies arriving on the scene found Kevin Altom suffering from 17 gunshot wounds. Altom was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.
Investigators said Mryglod had blood on her clothes and hands at the scene. During questioning, she admitted to shooting Altom, who she had recently moved back in with. Mryglod reportedly told Detective Justin Oliver that she had returned to live with Altom in an effort to help him “battle his spiritual demons.”
Mryglod revealed that she bought a .22 caliber pistol and ammunition three days before the shooting. On the day of the incident, she told investigators that she retrieved the firearm from her vehicle around 5 a.m. and returned to the house. After putting her daughter on the school bus, Mryglod said she confronted Altom as he sat on the couch.
Court documents state that Mryglod claimed she asked Altom if he was going to work before shooting him. “Mryglod stated while he was standing up, she turned her head, pointing the gun at Kevin, and began firing,” Detective Oliver's affidavit reads. She reportedly told detectives that she would “rather Kevin be dead and her in prison where she didn’t have to help him battle his spiritual side any longer.”
Altom’s current condition and recovery status following the attack were not included in the court records.
The sentencing concludes the long-running case, which drew attention for the extreme nature of the allegations. Authorities have not released further details at this time.
