Jonesboro, Ark. — The Jonesboro City Council has approved the purchase of a $2.75 million facility for the city’s Police Department. The decision came during the council’s meeting on Tuesday night.

The council authorized entering a contract with Halsey Real Estate to acquire the building, located at 1709 East Highland Drive. The property, formerly a Shelter Insurance Claim Offices building, spans 14,418 square feet and includes approximately 30 office spaces, two conference rooms, multiple breakrooms, an enclosed garage, and 51 parking spaces.

The city will fund the purchase and initial facility adjustments with a $3 million short-term Act 78 loan. Details on how the facility will be modified or when it will be operational have not yet been released.

In other actions on Tuesday, the council approved two rezoning requests. The first rezoning affects 2038 North Church Street, which will accommodate a planned gated apartment complex. The second rezoning changes the designation of 1400 Southern Ridge Boulevard from residential to commercial use.

Additionally, ordinances for private club permits for two businesses—Blazing Buffalo Sports Grill, located at 3310 Southwest Drive, Suite 7, and My Place Hotel at 2905 Gilmore Drive—were advanced to a third reading for further consideration.

The council also approved a partnership with the University of Arkansas for the Turtle Creek Wetlands Project. Details of that collaboration were not immediately available.

Further updates on these developments will be released as more information becomes available.
