LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Law enforcement agencies across Arkansas are stepping up efforts to prevent impaired driving as part of the nationwide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. The enforcement initiative runs from Friday, Aug. 21, through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7.
Coordinated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the campaign focuses on reducing impaired-driving crashes during one of the year’s most traveled holiday weekends. Officials aim to remind drivers to plan for alternative transportation if consuming alcohol.
According to the NHTSA, 505 people were killed in traffic crashes nationwide during the Labor Day holiday period in 2024. Of those fatal incidents, 34 percent—170 deaths—involved drivers under the influence of alcohol. Among drivers aged 18 to 34 who died in crashes during this timeframe, 40 percent had blood alcohol concentrations above the legal limit of 0.08.
"If your Labor Day plans include alcohol, make your transportation plans before you take your first drink," said Arkansas Public Safety Secretary Col. Mike Hagar. "Designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, or call someone you trust."
Authorities encourage individuals to intervene when friends or family members are impaired by helping them find a safe way home and taking their keys if necessary. Motorists who suspect someone is driving under the influence are urged to keep a safe distance and notify law enforcement when it is safe to do so.
The increased patrols will continue across Arkansas until the campaign concludes after the holiday weekend.
