The Arkansas Department of Education has unveiled a new universal application system for colleges and universities across the state. The Arkansas ACCESS Portal officially launched on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in the implementation of legislation aimed at simplifying the college admissions process.
The portal was developed under the Arkansas ACCESS Act, signed into law by Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders in early 2024. The law directed the creation of a uniform application system to streamline the college application experience for students and families.
Currently, 34 public universities and colleges, along with eight private institutions, accept applications submitted through the portal. Accessible to students enrolled in public and charter schools, the system will support applications for the 2027–2028 academic year. Private school students will gain access for the 2028–2029 academic year, while homeschooled students and GED recipients will be eligible the following year.
In addition to simplifying the admissions process, the ACCESS Portal allows students to apply to up to five participating schools at no cost. It also integrates academic records, automatically populating transcripts, grade point averages, and test scores into applications. Students using the portal will receive information about provisional admissions decisions and financial aid.
“The Arkansas ACCESS Portal takes what used to be a confusing, repetitive college application process that would overwhelm students and families and streamlines it into a simple process,” said Arkansas Secretary of Education Jacob Oliva in a statement.
The ACCESS Act, which underpins the portal’s creation, also introduced broader changes to higher education in Arkansas. It revised the funding framework for public institutions, linking state funding to metrics such as success in serving underrepresented populations and alignment with the state's economic and workforce needs.
According to the Arkansas Department of Education, the portal represents a significant step in improving higher education accessibility and efficiency. Further details about the system are available on the ACCESS Portal's official website.
