The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for the region, in effect until 8 p.m. Monday. Local weather reports recorded temperatures reaching 103 degrees Sunday at Hometown Radio’s Highland weather station and 102 degrees in Salem. This marks the seventh consecutive day with temperatures reaching 100 degrees or higher.

Health and safety officials are urging residents to take precautions under these dangerous conditions. If you must spend time outdoors, they recommend staying hydrated, frequently drinking water, wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, and avoiding direct sunlight. Frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas are strongly advised. Authorities are also reminding the public never to leave people or pets in unattended vehicles, even for short periods, as temperatures inside vehicles can rise dangerously fast.

Community members are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors and individuals living alone multiple times each day. For outdoor animals, ensure they have access to fresh water and sufficient shade to cope with the heat.

Looking ahead, meteorologists predict cooler highs in the low to mid-90s for today and Tuesday. However, daytime temperatures are expected to climb back up to 100 degrees by Wednesday, before returning to the low to mid-90s as the week progresses into the weekend.
