The Baxter County Sheriff's Office has received more than $100,000 in funding from the Baxter County Sheriff's Foundation, allowing for various upgrades and equipment acquisitions aimed at improving public service and law enforcement capabilities.
The foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, approved the funding during a recent Board of Directors meeting. Sheriff John F. Montgomery expressed gratitude to the foundation and its donors for their support, which has enabled several significant projects.
One major initiative includes ongoing renovations to the front lobby area of the Sheriff's Administration Office. The remodel doubles the number of service windows, increasing the office's capacity to assist walk-in visitors.
Enhancements at the Sheriff’s Office firing range on County Road 69 were another priority. New lighting, supported in part by the Baxter County Road and Bridge Department, and an automated moving target system have been installed to expand deputy training opportunities.
Specialized tools and technology have also been added to support investigations. The criminal investigation division now has advanced crime scene mapping software and an associated laptop computer.
For the department's fitness and wellness needs, a new treadmill was added to the downstairs gym for use by deputies.
The foundation has also made substantial investments in its canine unit. Funding has been appropriated for the purchase and training of two new drug-sniffing and tracking dogs. A new kennel facility is being constructed to house the canines, and dedicated equipment was acquired to outfit patrol vehicles to accommodate them.
Looking ahead, the department is in the process of developing a drone program. An unmanned aerial vehicle has been purchased and will be used for investigations and search-and-rescue operations. Necessary licensing and operator training are currently underway.
The foundation operates under the guidance of a voluntary, nine-member Board of Directors and is in good standing with the Arkansas Secretary of State and the IRS. Its mission is to support the Sheriff's Office and its personnel through the allocation of private donations.
