South Main Street in downtown Jonesboro is set to reopen Tuesday, following last week’s temporary closure caused by fallen debris from a two-story building. Officials have completed stabilization work on the structure at 219 South Main Street, according to a statement from the city.
"Initial shoring and stabilization efforts are complete at 219 South Main Street, and the street will reopen to vehicular traffic this afternoon, Aug. 11, 2026," the city announced. While no exact reopening time was given, motorists are advised to exercise caution and heed cones and temporary traffic patterns as work continues.
The closure began August 7 after a portion of the front column of the building separated and fell onto the sidewalk around 1:30 p.m. The debris did not cause any injuries, but officials evacuated the building and blocked off the 200 block of South Main Street to vehicles between Huntington Avenue and Cate Avenue while structural engineers assessed the site.
The city emphasized that while the debris was minor, immediate stabilization was necessary for safety. The closure was not expected to be extended long term. "Thank you to the building owner, engineer, and contractor who took immediate action and worked quickly to address the issue and safely reopen the street," the city expressed in its statement.
For now, drivers are urged to remain vigilant when passing through the area as contractors finish remaining work.
