The Arkansas State Police Highway Safety Office began its “Extreme Safety” campaign on Monday, Aug. 10, in an effort to promote safety for students during the back-to-school season. The campaign runs through Sunday, Aug. 16, and focuses on fostering safe behaviors among drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
“Back-to-school means more children walking to bus stops, more families crossing streets, and more bicycles on our roads,” said Arkansas Public Safety Secretary Col. Mike Hagar in a statement. “Every driver has a responsibility to slow down, eliminate distractions, and stay alert, especially in school zones and residential neighborhoods. By working together, we can help ensure every student arrives safely to school and returns home safely each day.”
Law enforcement officers participating in the initiative are encouraging drivers to obey posted speed limits, put away their phones, stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, and expect increased foot and bike activity in school zones and neighborhoods. Pedestrians are urged to use sidewalks, cross at marked crossings, ensure drivers have seen them before crossing streets, and remain aware of their surroundings. Cyclists are reminded to wear helmets, inspect their bikes before riding, use proper lights and reflective gear in low light conditions, and adhere to all traffic laws.
The Arkansas Highway Safety Office also directed the public to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website for additional bicycle and pedestrian safety information. Residents seeking local resources may contact the safety office directly at (501) 618-8136.
