The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) has confirmed a case of cyclosporiasis in Baxter County, marking another local instance of the parasite-linked illness that has affected residents statewide.
As of Friday, the ADH reports 237 cases of cyclosporiasis across Arkansas, though the specific source of the outbreak has not been disclosed. Cyclosporiasis is caused by consuming food or water contaminated with Cyclospora parasites, which are often found on raw or undercooked fruits and vegetables.
Symptoms of the illness typically include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue. The ADH advises anyone experiencing such symptoms to consult their healthcare provider.
Dr. Homer Brooks, a medical contributor to KSAR, emphasized the importance of proper food handling to help prevent the spread of the parasite. He recommends thoroughly washing all fruits and vegetables under running water before consuming, cutting, or cooking them. “Always wash your hands with soap and water before and after handling produce,” Dr. Brooks added.
